The clustered bar chart below shows the age gap for leading male actors compared to their romantic interest. The data is split to show the age gap when the actor was age 34 and below and when the actor was age 35 and above. For most actors, the average age gap significantly increases when they were 35 years and older. Harrison Ford is the only exception has his age gap dropped slightly as he got older.

The scatter plot below shows the percent of words spoken by female characters in select Disney movies over the last 30 years. With recent movies including Maleficent, Inside Out, Into the Woods, and Frozen, Disney may be putting an emphasis on having female characters speak more. However, most movies are still dominated by male characters. Even movies that feature female characters like Mulan and Pocahontas have over 65% of words spoken my male characters.

Note that Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland, both released in the 50s, had over 60% of words spoken by a female character and are not included here.

The Mekko chart below shows the 10 largest worldwide opening weekend movie releases in terms of US$ revenues. Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaks records last weekend even though it hadn’t been released in China yet.
The width of each column is proportional to the total sales. The height of each segment within the column indicates the percent of sales from US and international sources. The labels were set to show both the absolute sales as well as the automatically calculated percent of sales from each source.
Readers can quickly note that about 55-60% of sales typically come outside of the US. The most significant exception is Marvel’s The Avengers which only pulled 47% of its revenue from international theaters.
